Three generations -- My mom Gloria, me, and my daughter, Lexi -- participating in a Habitat Women Build

I’m thrilled to say that I’ve helped build Habitat for Humanity homes from Maine to Florida, and loved every moment.  Habitat speaks to me because its mission is so clear and basic: build simple, decent and affordable houses to end poverty housing and homelessness. Picking up a hammer and volunteering is fun, and seeing families doing well in their Habitat homes is unbelievably rewarding.

Habitat for Humanity offers hardworking people a “hand up,” not a “hand out,” and families are carefully selected based on need, ability to repay, and willingness to contribute their own “sweat equity.”

We all need shelter.  We all need a safe home. If you’ve never participated in a Habitat build, give it a try!  And donate what you can to this wonderful organization – the money is well spent.

Learn more about my local Habitat affiliate, Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, or contact Habitat for Humanity International to find the closest place for you to volunteer.
